SPRING IS IN THE AIR
Warmer weather has arrived in the Antelope Valley, and with it came the blossoms, and the growing grasses: The all to familiar allergies! Which brings us to the burning question when your upper teeth ache; is it sinusitis or a toothache?
There are 7 sinuses (air-filled cavities) in the head. The sinus that most commonly becomes infected is the maxillary sinus, it is located directly above the roots of the upper teeth. Which can cause dental pain. It can be difficult for the patient to ascertain whether the pain is coming from a tooth (or teeth) or the sinuses. Some common signs and symptoms of sinusitis are:
Tenderness over the sinuses
Nasal congestion
Headache
Foul odor
Nasal discharge (colored)
Fever
Dental pain.
Dr. Stein will evaluate your pain by checking history of sinus problems, x-rays, a clinical exam and testing vitality of symptomatic teeth including bite testing, temperature sensitivity and percussion tests.. Depending on the findings, Dr. Stein will either treat the sinusitis with the intention of ruling out that problem as the source of dental pain or will refer to a physician.

TEETH WHITENING
Even though the insurance companies consider the dental whitening process to be purely cosmetic, a recent study by the Forsyth Institute has shown the procedure has oral health benefits as well. The UV-free blue light that is part of the whitening procedure has bacteria killing properties that help fight periodontal disease and gingivitis.
Results had shown that even as little as 60 seconds' exposure significantly reduced the bacteria contributing to gingivitis and periodontal disease, while not only leaving the bacteria that are beneficial to the mouth unharmed, but also helping it grow.

COFFEE AND YOUR TEETH
Think coffee and cola are the worst drinks for your teeth? Energy and sports drinks might do more damage because of the type of acid they contain. Bottled lemonades and energy drinks may erode the enamel on your teeth up to 11 times more than colas, according to the journal General Dentistry. If you do consume drinks that might cause enamel damage, rinse your mouth with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing your teeth. If the drink has softened your enamel then even mildly abrasive toothpaste can cause more damage.
Here's how the drinks measured up on a scale of 0-5 (5 the most damaging, and 0 the least):
Coffee and tea - 0
Colas - 1
Lemon-lime soda, bottled iced tea w/lemon - 2
Sports and energy drinks - 4's and 5's
